New plant slated for Johnstown

New plant slated for Johnstown

An Ontario company has chosen Johnstown to become the first North American site of a recycling operation that uses a unique technology to turn plastics into light diesel oil and natural gas. Grant Lawson, president of BBL Energy Inc., said the company will take such “dirty” plastic waste as water bottles, food containers like margarine tubs, plastic bags, hospital waste, straws and industrial drums. This plastic is now plugging up landfills because it can’t be recycled. The company’s same machines…

Federal agency partners with plastic-zapping microwave company from Montreal

Federal agency partners with plastic-zapping microwave company from Montreal

Pyrowave, which uses its unique microwave technology to process plastic waste, will receive a $1-million investment under Export Development Canada’s (EDC) new Cleantech Co-Investment Program. The program aims to catalyze growth in smaller, early-stage Canadian clean tech companies with the potential to break into overseas markets. Pyrowave’s patented product breaks down plastic items, like Styrofoam cups or food containers, back into their original compounds. Many Canadians are recycling wrong, and it’s costing us millions

Canadians are throwing too much garbage into their blue bins, sometimes out of laziness or ignorance, but sometimes with the best of intentions. And it’s costing recycling programs millions of dollars a year. Even a few spoonfuls of peanut butter left in a jar can contaminate a tonne of paper and make it unmarketable — destined for the dump. Same for that glob of yogurt left in the bottom of the container. Contamination has recently become a much bigger issue…

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iIRlb5FCrFs&w=560&h=315] Starting in January, China’s government is enacting a plastic waste import ban, in an attempt to cut down on millions of tons of plastic and other recyclables they receive every year. This change may drastically affect how the world recycles and disposes of waste. But while government officials worldwide consider how to move forward after China’s plastic waste import ban, the main focus has to be on the environment. One way is to hold a clothing swap, which is exactly what it sounds like: a group of people get together and trade clothes with one another. Swapping is an…

How To Be More Than a Mindful Consumer

How To Be More Than a Mindful Consumer

by Annie Leonard, YES Magazine, August 2013 Consumerism, even when it tries to embrace “sustainable” products, is a set of values that teaches us to define ourselves, communicate our identity, and seek meaning through acquisition of stuff, rather than through our values and activities and our community. Today we’re so steeped in consumer culture that we head to the mall even when our houses and garages are full. We suffer angst over the adequacy of our belongings and amass crushing…
